What is 2ndLook News? 

Right now there are three main types of news sources available: ideologically left-leaning mainstream, ideologically right-leaning mainstream, and independent news in a niche, usually with its own strong bias. There are so many important, complicated topics that everyone wonders about but never quite feels like they’re getting the full picture from the usual news sources. Most people don’t have the time to do the kind of research that would be needed to have a solid, nuanced grasp of these topics.

That’s the gap where 2ndLook News steps in as an apolitical, slow news site. Apolitical in that we refrain from telling our readers what political or ideological conclusion they should come to and instead focus on informing about the various ideas that are out there, steel-manning each and explaining how they relate, what information they’re based on, and where they disagree. In this way, 2ndLook empowers movers and thinkers in their process of sensemaking by digging into these complex topics once the dust has settled and publishing fully cited, apolitical, deep-dive, peer reviewed articles.

What is this fundraiser about?

We’re starting off the year with a 10k matching grant that we’ve already raised 5k towards. We’ve never had this amount of funds on hand to work with and are excited that it will allow us to plan more long-term and hire more strategic (part time) team members, such as a dedicated managing editor to help push the articles through our publication process. If you appreciate our work here at 2ndLook and would like to read more deep-dive peer reviewed articles on important topics, please consider contributing towards the final 5k of the matching grant and your funds will have double the impact!

We are ultimately looking to double this 20k again to raise 40k in 2023. If you’d like to help with this please reach out.

What the funds will be used for:

• We’ve hired an amazing Managing Editor to stay on top of pushing articles through our publication process. You can check out her profile to get to know her here.
• Paying our writers and admin team
• Renewing web hosting, domains, and software to keep the site functioning smoothly

In 2023 we plan to publish a minimum of one article per month. It currently takes about 2-6 months per article we publish so we will focus on shortening our time to publication while continuing to improve the effectiveness of our editing and peer review process.

We believe 2ndLook brings something unique to the table, and in 2023 one of our goals is to seek partnerships with audio, video, short form, and aggregate news platforms in order to multiply our impact.

The first 10 donors will receive an invitation to an optional 40 minute Zoom call with members of our team. We’ll discuss changes we’re working on, brainstorm article topics and more. The hope is to create synergy and get inspired by connecting our biggest supporters with each other and our team!
